Girl Scout Junior Gardener Badge Project Ideas: Broccoli Plushie, Sewing Gardening Apron & More

We recently had a great time with some awesome Junior Girl Scouts at our Secret Garden Sewing, Crafting & Gardening Camp in Aldie, Virginia! They earned their Gardener Badge and the retro Sew Simple badge too!

We wanted to provide ideas for Girl Scout leaders and moms who are helping their troop earn the Gardener badge. We like putting a different twist on it by adding some sewing projects in. Here are some ideas and tips.

SEWING PROJECT WITH A GARDENING THEME: We taught the girls how to make gardening aprons with pockets for their gardening tools! OR if you don’t know how to sew (or don’t live close to our studio!) you can buy gardening aprons from time to time at Dollar Tree or Michaels…then the girls could decorate with fruit fabric paint stamps or tie dye….or hand sew buttons.

SEW FRUIT AND VEGGIE PLUSHIES: The girls LOVE any plushies especially these fun food ones. The broccoli was a big hit…you can always have them make a smaller version with hand sewing instead of machine sewing.

$1 GARDENING SUPPLIES: We purchased the gardening shovels for only $1 from Target Dollar Spot and
the gloves for $1 from Dollar Tree. The small gardening buckets we also found at Dollar Tree….even seeds at Dollar Tree. Dollar Tree tends to sell more of the outdoor gardening supplies from early Spring until late summer. Also seeds are pretty cheap at Home Depot, WalMart or Lowes.
PLANT SEEDS IN SMALL PAINTED POTS: We found the fake plastic terra cotta pots (great for seeds!) for 3 for $1 at Dollar Tree. The girls painted the pots with lots of fun paints! You can also embellish and bedazzle with craft gems or stickers. Then we taught them how to plants seeds in there. We decided on mixed salad greens (they don’t take to long to sprout and can later be transplanted). Then we painted blue pots and each planted a flower to take home.
